Birmingham terminates special needs transport contract over safeguarding concerns

Birmingham City Council has ended its contract with its transport provider for children with special needs amid concerns over safeguarding.

The council made the decision after discovering that North Birmingham Travel could not show that around half of its employees had been subject to Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks.

The termination of North Birmingham Travel’s contract as home to school provider for children has been revealed in a report to council leaders by Brianne Thomas, Birmingham’s education and skills strategic commissioning lead.

This details how council officers visited the transport provider and “could only assure themselves of 51 out of a 110 employee records of DBS disclosures".

Failing to provide such assurances presents “a significant safeguarding risk to the council”, warns Thomas.
