Basildon breaches privacy of traveller families

1 min read Social Care
Basildon council published personal and sensitive information about the children of local traveller families, the Children's Legal Centre has said.

The information included medical data, names and ages of children, along with details of their educational needs.

When the Local Government Ombudsman recommended to the council a course of action to deal with the breach of privacy, it chose not to adhere to it. The Ombudsman called for compensation on behalf of the complainants and proposed the sum of 300 pounds per person. It was also suggested that the council should write a letter of apology. While they have agreed to write a letter, they have refused to compensate the travellers.

Alison Fiddy, solicitor at the Children’s Legal Centre said: "It is very rare for a local authority to fail to uphold the recommendation of the Local Government Ombudsman. This is certainly the first case of its kind that we have come across."
