Balls pledges action on Steer behaviour report

1 min read Education
Children's Secretary Ed Balls has pledged to act on all recommendations made in a new report on behaviour in schools.

Sir Alan Steer's report Learning Behaviour: Lessons Learned found that progress has been made in raising behaviour standards in schools but warns there is still more to do.

He has called for more awareness of powers already possessed by teachers such as searching children for weapons, drugs and alcohol.

He also calls for local government intervention if standards of behaviour are classed satisfactory or below.

In total 47 recommendations are made in the report.

Launching new guidance on powers already available to teachers - drawn up alongside teachers' union NASUWT - Ed Balls said he will act on all points raised in the report.

"I am committing to supporting schools, by working with local authorities and head teachers, to provide the support and help they need to achieve the highest possible standard of pupil behaviour," Ed Balls said.
