Balls calls for more council support for looked-after children

1 min read Education Social Care
Children's Secretary Ed Balls has called on councils to do more to support looked-after children, after latest figures showed woeful progress in improving outcomes.

Among the most stark figures revealed this week was a widening in the school attainment gap between looked after children and those not in care. Just 14 per cent of looked after children left school in 2008 with five GCSEs grade A*-C, compared to 65 per cent of all children.

In a letter to all directors of children's services and lead members, Balls said: "Many local authorities have prioritised the education support they give to children in care. However we still need to go further and faster as the attainment of many of these children is far lower than that of their peers."
