Antisocial funds announced for 20 areas

1 min read Youth Justice
The Government has announced 20 areas that will receive a share of 13m to tackle antisocial behaviour among young people.

The funding, originally announced as part of the Youth Taskforce Action Plan earlier this year, will fund intensive intervention projects which aim to "challenge and support" young people in trouble.

The projects aim to ensure young people receive needs assessments and support from local services as well antisocial behaviour enforcement measures such as ASBOs.

The 20 areas receiving funding are: Gateshead; East Sussex; Sandwell; Bolton; Peterborough; Newcastle; Southampton; Newham; Manchester; Sheffield; Haringey; Middlesbrough; Bournemouth; Walsall; Nottingham; Northamptonshire; Trafford; Liverpool; Swindon and
Birmingham.

The projects, which will be set up between 2008 and 2011, are expected to reach 3,000 young people. The government received 141 bids for the funding.

Beverley Hughes, children and young people's minister, said: "These projects aim to help parents who often don't know where to go or who to turn to next to help them tackle the problem behaviour of their child.

"The focus of these projects is on prevention and support. It's non-negotiable and so we will intervene early to stop young people getting into a situation where their bad behaviour can spiral out of control and enforcement has to be used."
