Aim: To reduce antisocial behaviour
A local police officer came up with the idea for an activity centre as a way of entertaining young people in the village of Kirby Muxloe after he became alarmed at their tendency to hang around in groups and cause trouble for older residents.
PC Carl Sutherley says the main reason for young people getting into trouble was boredom. "Apart from a run-down basketball court, there were very few facilities to occupy the young people in the village, so they tended to hang around in groups," he says. "I was convinced that if they had somewhere they could call their own where they could meet and channel their energy without upsetting the rest of the community, then everybody would benefit."
