ACTION NEEDED TO IMPROVE POST-GCSE ADVICE

Vocational learning providers have called on the government to sort out advice in schools on post-GCSE options.

Ministers need to address the way schools offer guidance on post-GCSE academic and vocational learning options to meet the target of 500,000 Apprentices by 2020, the Association of Learning Providers said.
Chief executive Graham Hoyle said: “Ministers have said that during the last election they were confronted by people saying ‘why don’t you bring back Apprenticeships?’ when the modern version of the programme had been around for 10 years. The ignorance about this highly-valued form of vocational learning stems mainly from failings in England’s education and careers guidance system.”
Last week saw the highest ever English and maths GCSE results – and the biggest proportion achieving A* to C passes. Nearly one in five entries gained an A* or A grade.
But the Federation of Small Businesses said too many pupils leave school lacking basic numeracy and literacy skills and the British Chambers of Commerce called for urgent reforms to secondary education.
