Greater access to training for disadvantaged young people and improvements in careers guidance in schools are among proposals.
The measures have been published in a Skills for Jobs white paper, which aims to “put an end to the illusion that a degree is the only route to success and a good job”, according to the Department for Education.
It also aims to “supercharge further and technical education, realigning the whole sytem around the needs of employers”. This includes training young people to address skills gaps in the workforce.
Specific mention is given of the need to train more people in the construction, digital, energy and manufacturing sectors.
