
If replicated across England and Wales the hubs would involve probation staff working with specialists in mental health, training, education, housing and speech and language therapy to “respond to the unique needs of young adults” aged between 18 and 25.
The call has been made after academics at Sheffield Hallam and Middlesex universities evaluated the Youth2Adulthood (Y2A) probation hub in Newham, London, over a two-year period.
This hub has been found to improve coordination of support by having multiple services in one place, offer tailored help to young people, and reduce pressure on probation staff.
Staff and young people involved are “overwhelmingly positive about the hub and unanimously agreed this type of bespoke service should be rolled out” across the country", said researchers.
