Amerdeep Somal: The SEND system ‘really is broken’

Amerdeep Somal was appointed as the local government and social care ombudsman in February, after being named as the preferred candidate by ministers last autumn.

Somal, a judge at the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal, has specialist judicial knowledge of special, educational needs and disabilities (SEND) within the legal system and describes the LGO role as “something I am very passionate about”.

She is also board chair of the Law Society, a role she will took on in January alongside her position as ombudsman.

The LGO’s most recent annual report finds that the majority of cases dealt with by Somal are linked to complaints about services for children and young people with SEND.
