Grants from the Scottish government designed to enable more disabled children and their families to access short breaks
What is it? The Scottish government has allocated close to £2m of funding to improve access to short breaks. As part of the initiative, which was announced last month, £1.3m will be available for organisations to provide short breaks for children and young people with multiple needs through the Better Breaks scheme. Meanwhile, the Take a Break programme will offer a further £558,450 for families that want to organise their own breaks. Public health minister Michael Matheson said: "This package of funding is focused on giving families with a disabled child up to the age of 20 the opportunity for a short break, taken either together or separately. We want to see this initiative improve quality of life, health and wellbeing for hundreds of families in Scotland."
How much is on offer? The Better Breaks programme will offer grants of between £10,000 and £50,000 while grants of between £200 and £500 are available via the Take a Break scheme.
What will it fund? As well as covering the costs of trips, funding for necessary specialist equipment and training will also be considered. Families applying for grant aid can also use the money to purchase items such as camping equipment or bicycles.
When is the deadline? The deadline for applications for Better Breaks funding is midday on 1 February 2012. Families wanting to apply for direct financial support through the Take a Break scheme must contact the grants team by 31 March 2012.
