Grants to improve pitches and bring disused playing fields back into use

What is it? Sport England's Places People Play programme was established to create a legacy of participation for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It will be investing millions of pounds of National Lottery funding into a range of sports projects including the Protecting Playing Fields scheme. Sport England says that playing fields are "vital to a vibrant grassroots sports environment", so it has set up the fund to improve or repair those that have fallen into a poor state.

How much is on offer? £10m will be available to protect and improve playing fields. The first of five £2m funding rounds was launched this year, with the final round to be awarded in 2014/15.
