Esmee Fairbairn Foundation - Main Fund

1 min read
What it is: The Esmee Fairbairn Foundation has launched a new funding approach this month. Its Main Fund now distributes about two-thirds of its overall funding to a wide range of projects, focused primarily on the UK's cultural life, education, environment and the participation of disadvantaged people.

How much is on offer: Last year, the foundation made grants totalling £30m, two-thirds of which were allocated through the Main Fund. The average grant is about £50,000, although applications for more or less money are also considered.

What it will fund: The foundation is open to suggestions on benefiting charitable organisations in innovative ways. It is particularly interested in work that addresses a significant gap in provision, challenges convention or sets out to influence policy. Grants will fund core project expenses but will not cover extras like equipment costs.

Who can apply: The Main Fund is only open to organisations that carry out legal charitable work in the UK. It will not support organisations carrying out work that is primarily the responsibility of government, health trusts or health authorities. Neither will it fund any project that primarily benefits the independent education sector.
