The story of my name

Aim: This is a warm-up exercise that encourages young people to begin exploring links between their names and their cultural or family history.

You will need

How to do it

Invite each member of the group to "sign in" on the flipchart paper, before telling a short personal story about their name. It may be a good idea to introduce yourself and share your story first to demonstrate what you mean. For example: "My name is Elizabeth and I was named after my grandmother. It has been a family name for five generations. My dad wanted to call me Gladys after his mother so I am quite pleased they went with my mother's choice, although everyone calls me Beth anyway. I will probably continue the tradition if I have a daughter."
