What do you do?
I support care leavers who are going to university. It's a pilot scheme and I meet with them on a regular basis to discuss any issues they have. I also help with their finances and liaise with their universities, many of which are now taking a greater interest in young people from a care background. I have helped those starting university this year with grant applications and have arranged get-togethers, and even accompanied some to interviews and open days.
How often do you meet the young people?
I try to see them at least every three months during their full three-year degree. I also stay in contact by phone and email. When we meet I try to keep things relaxed and informal to build up their trust. I am also working with third year students who are just about to embark on finding a job at a particularly tough time.
