I work with young parents aged 16 to 19 in Camden, London. We have a service level agreement with the borough and take referrals from various professionals such as midwives, health visitors or Connexions.
Our main aim is to support young families with practical needs such as benefits and housing, and also help young people get back into education, training or employment. As a teacher, I also take classes on English, IT and maths with the long-term aim of helping young people support their own families.
This is quite a unique project as we focus on clients as young people and as parents. Services like Sure Start are available, but young people may not recognise they have a need or may simply feel more comfortable among their peers. It's a roll-on-roll-off service so young people can access the service for as long as they feel they need it.
