Telford and Wrekin Council was founded in 1974 as The Wrekin District Council, and was a lower-tier district council until 1998. The district was renamed Telford and Wrekin in 1998 when the council became a unitary authority.

The End Child Poverty Coalition ranks the Shropshire local authority as the ninth most deprived area in the West Midlands.

It is among the top 30% most income-deprived local authorities in England, with 29 of the 108 neighbourhoods in Telford and Wrekin sitting among the 20% most deprived in England.

Financial challenges

Councillors in Telford and Wrekin approved £17.5mn worth of cuts to budgets for the 2024/25 financial year citing huge pressures from both adults and children’s social care services.
