On 23 April the High Court handed down judgment in one of the very few cases where an adoption order has been revoked, AX v BX & Ors (Revocation of Adoption Order) (Rev 1) [2021] EWHC 1121 (Fam). A had been adopted at the age of eight and is now 18. Her relationship with her adoptive parents deteriorated in 2018 and she and her sister B had moved to live with their birth mother. It was accepted by all parties and by the court that the adoption had broken down irretrievably and there were exceptional circumstances which justified the revocation of an adoption order.
In May, the BBC ran a story of Claire and Ed, a couple whose adopted sons had been making progress after 13 years in their care, but who had left the family home and cut off all contact. Over a period of three months the older boy had stopped going to school and was suspected of dealing drugs. The younger boy followed his lead and they no longer had any relationship with their adoptive parents.
