
Stella Creasy spoke out last month in favour of an amendment to the Children and Social Work Bill that would place a duty on local authorities to ensure all children in their areas received sex and relationships education (SRE) that covers same-sex relationships, sexual consent, sexual violence and domestic violence as part of personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) lessons. Despite the attempt being blocked by Conservative MPs, she remains determined to keep pushing for the change.
Why is good quality SRE necessary?
It is the "R" for relationships that I think is really necessary. The mechanics of sex is already in the national curriculum but the consequences are not. Compound interest and composting are a requirement of the curriculum but relationships are not.
