DfE set to announce plans to make SRE compulsory

The Department for Education is set to announce plans to make sex and relationship education (SRE) compulsory in English schools, CYP Now understands.

Reports have emerged today that Education Secretary Justine Greening will make announcement on SRE imminently in the face of increasing pressure from campaigners and MPs.

A DfE spokeswoman told CYP Now that an announcement on SRE will be made "soon", adding that further details could not be provided until the announcement is made.

Responding on twitter to reports that SRE will be made compulsory, former children's minister Tim Loughton welcomed the news.
