Jameel Hadi, Participation and involvement worker, NSPCC

1 min read
I've been with the Tim Parry Jonathan Ball Young People's Centre in Warrington for four and a half years, running a youth participation scheme training young people to become sports leaders and organising events for younger children.

Sport is not an area that the NSPCC is really known for, but it reaches the kind of disengaged young people we want to work with. It is important to engage with young people in a way that they will respond to.

It's not just about playing sport, though. We do lots of activities from training young people as sports leaders to delivery. Our model is that children can come here and use the facilities if that's all they want, but there are trained social workers here too. A lot of participation is top-down and asking children and young people what they think for box-ticking purposes, whereas we really try to listen to the children's perspective.
