Zahra Printer’s personal experiences of the care system were a key motivation for getting involved in the Care Leaver Covenant and improving outcomes for young people leaving care.
In July, Printer became the first care-experienced chair of the covenant’s advisory board since its launch in 2018. Printer was appointed earlier this year aged just 26 after joining the board in 2020.
She also has experience of the sector from a professional perspective, working as a policy adviser on care leaver issues at the Department for Education and in a voluntary capacity as an independent visitor for children in care.
The covenant is a national inclusion programme for care leavers funded by the DfE. It aims to tackle the disadvantages that young people aged 16 to 25 face when leaving care and helps them to live independently by encouraging organisations to pledge support for care leavers.
