Interview: Naomi Douglas, children's centre health visitor, Community Health Oxfordshire

Spending time in a Bolivian community where electricity was scarce, running water non-existent, and families of six were living on just 1.60 a week, made Naomi Douglas realise it really is the small things that can make a big difference.

Douglas, who has been working as a children's centre health visitor for Community Health Oxfordshire for the last two and a half years, spent five months volunteering in a tiny clinic as part of a grassroots, non-governmental organisation's community project.

"While I was there I did very basic things, like teaching children about washing their hands," she says. "I also raised money and designed and managed the building of a toilet because there weren't any. They seem like little things but they made such a big difference to the community. My time in Bolivia is one of the things that made me interested in public health."
