Health visitor plan fails to ease entry into role

Professionals have welcomed the government's bid to boost health visitor numbers, but warn that continuing barriers to entry might thwart its plan.

Much has happened since the Tories launched their key pre-election pledge to recruit an extra 4,200 health visitors as part of plans to make Britain more "family friendly".

Two years on and with the party now in power, the rhetoric is finally promising to become reality with the publication of the Health Visitor Implementation Plan.

It sets out for the first time the detail of how this goal will be achieved by 2015, as well as proposals to "reinvigorate" the profession and integrate health visitors into children's centres.

Massive challenges

But while the plan has been warmly received by the sector, the ambitious proposals pose massive challenges on the ground.
