Interview: Maria Eagle MP, justice minister

3 mins read Youth Justice Interview
Politics is clearly in Maria Eagle's blood. Not only is her twin sister Angela the minister for pensions, but she has an inherent ability to turn questions around to what she wants to talk about -- on this occasion the Youth Rehabilitation Order (YRO).

Heralding it as a "really positive tool", Eagle believes the YRO can be a catalyst for improvement in the youth justice sector amid tough economic times.

The YRO, launched last November alongside the Scaled Approach, provides a menu of interventions for magistrates to choose from, effectively tailoring community sentences to the needs of a young offender.

Early cases using the new system are just starting to filter through the court system, but Eagle is already convinced of its value.

"We have come a long way and what we now have in place has the capacity to show much more improvement over time," she says.
