
A two-year stint travelling and working abroad in the mid-1990s opened the eyes of Helen Johnson to the plight of refugees and the “incredible” hospitality of the communities she met in parts of Africa. Upon her return to the UK, the former teacher became a local authority social worker before landing a job as a project worker at the Refugee Council, where she has remained for more than 20 years. Johnson became the council’s head of children’s services in 2017 and was awarded an Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Year Honours. A key aspect of her role is overseeing the charity’s work supporting unaccompanied asylum-seeking children who arrive in the UK; a group that is facing growing challenges.
