Interview: Dads' club - Jonathan Anthony attends a fathers' support group in Ashford, Kent

3 mins read Early Years Interview
"Nappies are a big topic of conversation," replies Jonathan Anthony, when asked what gets discussed at the fathers' support group he attends in his home town of Ashford in Kent. "Mostly we boast about the number of wet wipes we used on the bad ones."

A bunch of blokes sitting around boasting with some toilet humour chucked in might sound more like a night down the local. In truth, Chill with Dads, run by volunteer charity Home-Start Ashford, offers fathers regular courses on parenting and a support network of other dads.

Jonathan says the opportunity to speak freely with other fathers is what helps him most. "We've got dads there who have children of all ages so there's a reservoir of information," he says. "It's nice to get the male perspective on things rather than from an expert or your wife."

The role of fathers and the impact they have on a child's upbringing has become a focal point for politicians with both Labour and the Conservatives gearing up to release their family and relationship green papers.
