
I was in the Cubs and the Woodcraft Folk. I was brought up in a white working-class area of Birmingham and was the only Asian face around - those groups really helped me make friends.
What was your first job?
I did an HND in broadcasting and journalism but found it difficult to get a job in the media. About 10 years ago, I started volunteering in an Arabic supplementary school. I really enjoyed that, and a chance came up with Balsall Heath Forum to work with local young Yemenis. We did some amazing work there. I also started studying for my JNC youth work qualification.
