Health: Advice on ... Stress

2 mins read Health
It's that time of year when pupils undergo school and college examinations. Andrew McCulloch, from the Mental Health Foundation, suggests how youth workers can help to ease young people through such stressful periods.

Q: Who does stress affect?

Stress simply refers to the things that could cause us anxiety, which, for most people, would be a long list.

Stress can motivate us. The body deals with stress by initiating the 'fight or flight' reaction: adrenaline is released, our muscles become tense and our focus narrows to the task in hand. If this reaction is short-lived and can be channelled positively it is a good thing and can help us to achieve goals.

But if this reaction to stress continues, without finding an outlet or resolution, then it becomes damaging.

Stress is a problem when it becomes unmanageable, which is relevant for young people who may not have learned techniques for dealing with stressful situations.
