Clare Crawford, Service manager for youth clubs, Hackney Council

1 min read Youth Work
I switched to youth work from social care 13 months ago. I enjoy working with young people as they make that transition into adulthood. It feels like we can really help shape how they will grow up and the opportunities available to them.

I lead a team of 30 centre-based youth workers and develop partnerships with groups like residents' organisations so they understand the work we are doing. We also need to work with the police and primary care trusts. Typically I'll visit several youth clubs an evening - it's a great way to get to know the young people and make sure their needs are met.

Our strategic partnership, Team Hackney, has had great success working to reduce teenage pregnancy. Two of our youth clubs run nights for young women after they asked for somewhere they could talk openly about issues that affect them. We cover all sorts of areas from self-defence to domestic violence and having healthy relationships. We also provide workshops and information for mixed groups. It's a step away from the traditional approach to this work.
