Can you tell us about your role?
I work within the Migrant Children's Project, based at the Children's Legal Centre's London office. I provide basic immigration law and child law advice to professionals and carers working with migrant children, and directly to young people where appropriate.
Immigration law questions arise in different scenarios, and range from nationality questions about children who might already be British citizens, through children trying to regularise their permission to stay in the UK under (or outside of) immigration rules, to asylum-seekers.
What kinds of legal problems arise for refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant children in the UK?
Refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant children have complex, specific needs to do with the cultures they are coming from and what they have been through to get to the UK. Usually, they will not speak English. These are not only social but legal problems because the assessment of social/welfare needs is a legal process.
