
Over the past few years, a raft of reports and policy guidance documents have been published that, alongside emphasising the importance of the mental health and emotional wellbeing of children and young people, describe a wide and diverse field of challenges that professionals working in this area face. Even the name CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) is the subject of much debate in terms of where services do or don't fit in the new world of universal, targeted and specialist services.
Overall, many of these documents indicate progress. However, they also reveal ongoing difficulties: how to support young people across "transition" points; how to engage with the most vulnerable children; and the unacceptable variations in services across the country.
