There is nothing quite like performing in front of an audience. And while some young people might find the prospect terrifying, there are usually plenty more only too willing to step into the limelight.

Taking part in a theatre production can help young people learn a range of performance skills, and if managed well, it can help boost a young person's self-esteem and give them the confidence to try new things.

At the recently opened Bernie Grant Arts Centre in north London young people have taken part in a youth production titled Griot. Selma Nicholls, programming assistant at the centre, says: "It was a courageous production involving more than 30 young people with little or no previous theatre experience. Watching it come together on opening night was amazing. The young people got standing ovations, a great reward for all their weeks of hard work."
