Activity ideas: Things to do - Hold a music event

2 mins read Youth Work
"Playing on stage feels amazing - the main thing is the crowd and the atmosphere," says 18-year-old Liam Foster. Liam, who plays guitar for The Strums, is one of many young people who regularly take part in Creative Voice, a weekly music event held in Hull.

Creative Voice is just one of the music events organised by youth services, which are engaging communities across the UK in a celebration of local talent.

Louise Yates is a team manager at Creative Connexions, which specialises in devising arts, music and film activities for young people in the Humber region. She has worked in partnership with Hull City Council since May 2002, when the first Creative Voice was held. "It was organised as a youth arts festival by the council, Connexions Humber and BBC Blast," she says.

The event was such a success that, following consultation with young people, a steering group was set up in 2007 to develop a community of young musicians and arrange regular gigs at The Lamp music venue.
