Young mayors, the UKYP and me, Ban Ki-moon

Phew! Still coming down from yesterday's young mayors' event in Portcullis House in Westminster opposite parliament. Packed inside, standing room only, loads and loads of young people from youth councils and some adult participation workers. I was chairing a panel "debate" on the role of young mayors - how they work and how they can have most impact.

There are about 13 young mayors in councils scattered across the country. The Dept of Communities and Local Government has just coughed up £2m to fund the creation of a further 20. We had three of the existing ones on the panel plus shadow children's minister Tim Loughton. They each said their piece and then I threw it open to the floor. What ensued was electric, it was mayhem.
