I doubt that Iain Duncan Smith could live for a year on £53 a week. But so what if he did? If he took the bait in the trap set by the petition, which claims nearly 500,000 signatures, and tackled it like a survival challenge... who knows, he might make a go of it.
People do pointless whacky stunts like pogo-ing up Everest or rowing in a bathtub across the Atlantic. The Work and Pensions secretary might sacrifice his life for 12 months in the same spirit. He could deprive himself of virtually all material and social support, including some essentials.
