The General Teaching Council - Paul Sunners

The General Teaching Council has always struck me as a disappointment. Its most serious sanctions almost always follow an employer's disciplinary process which has, in effect, already rendered the teacher unemployable, assuming that references are given properly. And sometimes the sanctions seem far less than I would have hoped. And sometimes teachers escape disciplinary sanction because they resign before their case has been heard.

Take the case of Paul Summers, a headteacher of a special school for pupils aged 5-11 with learning difficulties, who was first disciplined by his employer alongside six other staff. Three were dismissed for gross misconduct, and Paul Sunners resigned before his hearing was completed.
