Responding to national standards for unregulated accommodation

The National Leaving Care Benchmarking Forum (NLCBF), part of Catch22, responds to the Department for Education’s consultation on ‘Introducing new national standards for independent and semi-independent provision for looked-after children and care leavers aged 16-17’.

In April 2020, Catch22 and NLCBF submitted a response to the DfE consultation considering 'Reforms to unregulated provision for children in care and care leavers'. 

In our response, we called for a more person-centred system with relationships at the core, but only to be considered as one element of a wider ranging review of the children's care system. 

As we write this, the independent review of children’s social care is gathering pace, alongside a second consultation on a developed series of proposals for the reform of care for looked after and care leavers. So again, we have been asking ourselves, and those who matter the most – young care leavers and the local authority teams working to support them – whether these proposals will make a real difference to improving the lives of children in and leaving care.
