I was absolutely delighted to see the proposals for peer support and challenge for DCSs. The sooner we all recognise that children's services overall is no stronger than the weakest link, the better. And we can all learn from others; it is not 'giving up' five days a year but using five days every year for constructive learning and professional development. I was always on the look out for new ways of doing things, not plagiarisation but learning from the best.
There are two challenges, however; the first being that local political imperatives and priorities cannot be seen to be over-ridden by the professionals. Of course, whatever the political environment, poor practice must be improved, but there will be local solutions and local flavours.
