Meyrem’s story: The challenges facing new kinship carers

Meyrem is a kinship carer based in London. She looks after her niece and two nephews who are 12, 11 and nine – two of whom have complex needs.

Mayrem also has two older children of her own. She explains the challenges faced by kinship carers:

When our journey started to seven and a half years ago. It happened so quickly and I was very naive to the whole situation as I didn't know what kinship.

I took the children on without knowing it was going to be a long-term arrangement.

When I took them on I was getting a promotion in work at the time but the local authority the children were under to keep the children, I’d have to leave my job so the children can transition but there wasn't any financial support, like maternity or adoption pay, so I took unpaid leave and had a two-year career break.
