How nurseries can better communicate funding complexities to parents

Since the announcement of the 2023 spring budget, there has been much debate around the most pertinent topics facing the entirety of the early years sector — the complexities of funded childcare and how this is communicated to parents.

The notion that the increased funding rates will enable providers to offer completely free childcare is a popular misconception faced by parents.  Yes, the first 30 hours are free — or will be for the majority of working parents by 2025 — but the objective of the recently announced cash boost will help offer more affordable early years education, not make it a free service.

Increasing fees puts nurseries in a difficult position, but one that they can’t easily avoid. The process can be painful for both parties, particularly as parents have a lack of understanding of the issues faced by the sector and their cost of living is already causing concern.
