
Latest official figures show 570,000 young people were unemployed between February and April 2024 – a 15% increase on the same period last year and a 40% increase on 2022's record lows.
New research from Centrepoint reveals some of the stories behind that data – with many young people struggling to get their foot in the door. We can all point fingers about economic activity, but we should instead be asking ourselves why this is happening and what solutions are needed.
With support from property finance experts, Together, we commissioned a national poll of 1,000 16- to 25-year-olds to understand their employment aspirations and any barriers they face in reaching them. Results highlighted that young people want to work in business, health and social care, and hospitality sectors, but they struggle to secure a job because of various barriers – namely lack of work experience, local jobs and skills.
