
The system has been described by the schools minister as ‘creaking at the seams’, particularly in relation to the widespread delays being experienced in the issuing of education, health and care plans (EHCPs).
For me, as headteacher of a high performing special school in Bexley, South East London, it is very clear that the challenges we are facing go far beyond EHCP delays, which we know is a national problem caused by sheer demand.
Families waiting for these plans are indeed in limbo – but what happens when the EHCP arrives? The reality is that the growing need for specialist provision is drastically outstripping supply. There are simply not enough places, either now or for the future.
