It has become almost impossible to listen to a Whitehall policy announcement, read the latest research on recommendations for children’s services reform or browse through a public sector publication without coming across the words "multi-agency" or "collaborative working".
The vision of having a team of professionals working together to support a vulnerable child and their family has become the mantra for effective early intervention. This model is increasingly regarded as key to delivering a better service to both the individuals concerned and the communities in which they live against the backdrop of constrained public spending.
Although it has taken many years to reach this point, it does now seem that multi-agency working is becoming a reality. In a survey of children’s services staff that Capita conducted recently, 84% of respondents said that their authorities were already working in or planning to work in multi-agency teams to help improve outcomes around children and families.
