Childcare reforms – oiling the wheels of the funding train

The announcement in the Queen’s speech that tax-free childcare is to be extended to under-12s from autumn 2015 will be welcome news for many lower income families.

For authorities and providers alike, managing the funding associated with Early Years and childcare provision is likely to become a much more complex and labour intensive undertaking as the changes are rolled out.

But there could be a more efficient way of doing things that would not only simplify the process for children’s services teams but also make it easier for providers to meet their reporting requirements.

Taking the online route

The ability to apply online for a school place or check eligibility for free school meals has proved increasingly popular with families in recent years and played a key role in helping authorities to do more with less.
