Q I'm working with a young man whose mother is shortly to be released from prison. He is confused and angry - saying he doesn't want to see her one minute and then longing for her to come home the next. How can I support him?

Your young client is bound to be conflicted in his emotions. Depending on his age and the length of his mother's sentence, he and the rest of his family will need specific support to deal with the changes this will bring to them.

Agencies such as Barnardo's, the Prison Advice and Care Trust (Pact) and Action for Prisoners' and Offenders' Families - part of the charity Family Lives - offer support to children of offending parents and the national i-HOP service offers training and advice to everyone working in this field.
