The Cedars is a residential care home for looked-after children diagnosed with severe autism.

The four-bedroom home and attached school was opened in August 2020 and is operated by Hexagon Care Services.

Rated “outstanding” by Ofsted earlier this year, the Cedars focuses closely on preparing its residents, boys aged 15 to 18, for the transition from care to what comes next, whether that be supported accommodation or semi-independent living.

“We walk with them through all aspects of life like you would your own children,” says Debbie Denby, registered manager of the Cedars since 2021. “We teach them to cook, use the washing machine, to clean, to go shopping, to manage money and personal hygiene. We also talk to them about their emotions and social communication.”
