Parents across London who have adopted a child through Coram's adoption service are encouraged to attend the “school age” parenting groups when their children are aged between three and nine, benefiting from targeted parenting support to strengthen family attachments.
The Parenting Skills for Adopters programme is an adapted version of the Incredible Years (IY) parenting programme, which has a strong international evidence base for its outcomes in improving challenging behaviour in children living in a diverse range of families in terms of ethnicity, social class, ability and additional needs.
Social workers at Coram have been delivering the programme since 2001, after the charity secured a grant from the Headley Trust to develop Caroline Webster Stratton's IY programme and tailor it to meet the specific challenges faced by adoptive parents.
