Parents urged to read and sing to children

3 mins read Early Years
Early intervention programme focuses on parental activities that are shown to boost children's cognitive and literacy development.

Project

Early Words Together

Purpose

To improve young children's communication, language and literacy

Funding

£3,500 for resources and training to deliver the programme to 100 families in up to four settings

Background

Sharing books with toddlers and other early learning activities can have a big impact on their readiness for school and ongoing attainment. Yet parents often are not aware of the importance of the home learning environment in their child's first three years, research by the National Literacy Trust found. So in 2010, the charity developed an early intervention programme focusing on three parental activities shown to boost children's cognitive and literacy development - sharing stories and access to books, singing songs and reciting rhymes, and talking to children.
