In Practice: Case study - Targeted help for teenage parents

Young parents can be difficult to reach out to but one children's centre in Northumberland has managed to do just that with a programme tailor-made to meet their needs. Jo Stephenson finds out what has made the service such a success.

Objectives Teenage parents can be among the most vulnerable so Ashington Children's Centre in Northumberland, run by children's charity NCH, has made a concerted effort to reach out to them. The aim was to support, inform and promote good parenting, as well as boost their confidence and encourage them to return to education and employment.

What was done The centre established its Young Ashington Parents' service, an eight-week programme of sessions led by health professionals and family support workers, in September 2003. Creche facilities are provided and teenage mothers are particularly welcomed into the group, which offers them breastfeeding support and a chance to socialise.
